Such a beautiful story. That dog knows y'all are hurting & he comes to love on y'all during your heartache. Amazing that he travels 10 miles to visit. Dogs are so intuitive anyway, but the fact that he seemed to seek y'all out...amazing. What a magical blessing!
I just finished reading your Rhizosphere article about writer and readers as heroes. Just wanted to say that this story and the way that you have written it definitely "transcends". Thank you for the sharing.
I love this story of the white dog. Also, I am thankful you gave Asa a good home. The day I found him at the boat ramp was hectic. I called both rural counties hoping they had a good animal control center that could help find his owners but one county didn't even have such a facility and the other had no interest in helping find his owner and was a kill facility. I took him to a vet in Oconee County to have his foot looked at and finally brought him home. He is obviously a very intelligent dog and I am so thankful you chose to adopt him. He is a very lucky boy!
This reminds me so much of Hal Borland's "Penny: The Story of a Free Spirit Basset Hound." And it is SO Pyr. This captures what the big floofs are like -- loving, loyal, determined -- hearts too big for just one family.
Oh Janisse, y'all have a long-distance relationship! I imagine dog miles are like dog years, exponential in both distance and time. It's funny because the only serious romantic relationship I've had in 16 years post divorce was a sweet decade-long, long-distance love with a best-friend-turned boyfriend. The catch was that he lived thousands of miles away, so we only saw each other when he traveled for his conservation work (yes, he had a noble vocation and kind heart too!) I share these uber-personal details because the acute pain of absence was only matched by the sheer joy of presence. And I felt those emotions bound together, oh so tightly, while reading your poignant, lovely story of companionship. And so we love, and so we love again.
Such a fabulous story. thanks for sharing. I hope he stays in your life in whatever way is appropriate for him and you and Raven. He sounds like a love.
This dog’s tale is about how large love is. He cannot be bound by ownership or 10 miles simply because he has room for two families in his big old heart.
I have a big white dog and this touched my heart so deeply 🤍 Come meet my big bear anytime!!! Southern Oregon 🤍🤍🤍
I love this story. I have always been a cat person but this surely makes me want to share a dog with somenone.

Janisse! Such a cool story. Do you still own the farm where we filmed in 1997? Iso loved your garden!

I love this. There are so many lessons about life and love and loss in this story, and you tell it so well. Thank you.

I couldn’t stop reading this! 😂 Have you spoke to his other family?
Reminded me of Terry Kay's To Dance With the White Dog.

Oh how I remember my friend Terry Kay’s wonderful book To Dance With The White Dog! He’s returned obviously.
