Nevermind - I found the correct place !

Expand full comment

I moved to a new location last spring and have been hiking and walking often, just enjoying the outdoors, but I'm also interested in learning more about the local nature and eco systems.

....I just signed up late for this "Journey in Place," so how can I find the first four Thursday lessons? Thank you.

This will be a way for me to connect with my new home in the Appalachian mountains. I am from the flatlands and lived there for 37 years until we decided we needed a new perspective. I miss home. I know the mountains are my safe place but I am in a foreign land. How do I let my feet sink into new ground that’s full of mica and quartz? How do I trust the cold, clear shallow rivers? Here’s me signing up for this earnest prompting to connect with PLACE!

I am by no means a writer, but have always wanted to write about the woods on my grandparent’s land that I grew up playing in and are still my most favorite place to be. I live 2 hours away though so am not able to be there weekly. Would that be a problem for me doing the weekly exercises, etc if I chose to do do this? Thanks so much

Jessica, such a thoughtful question. Maybe you could have 2 main places--the woods on your grandparents' land and the place where you now live. So you could be thinking about either of them. All the get-outside exercises are optional.....Another idea would be to be outside where you are now but be thinking about those other woods. I think there will be lots of ways to do this. If this calls to you, sign up.

Hi! I tried to pay for the $99 year-long subscription, yet substack says "You already have an active subscription", maybe because I've been a free follower for a while? Do you have any suggestions how I can fix that?

James, I went in the "back door" & tried to see what's happening. What email address are you using? (If you want to DM that to me for privacy sake, please do.) My email address is janisseray1 and I'm at gmail.

I sent you a separate email. I may have solved the mystery - appears that I did subscribe earlier this year, so I needed to "renew" rather than "subscribe". Let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

Wanna make sure I’m subscribed to the Place Workshop. So looking forward to learning more from you, Janisse!

I don't completely understand Substack's system, Phred, but it appears to me that you're subscribed!

How wonderful!! Such good timing, for me. I visited Asheville, NC with my husband one weekend last summer and on a walk in the woods was taken by several ancient trees. Really. We bought a home there two weeks later and will leave Atlanta in January for our new place.

I recently inherited and am living on property owned by my parents. It's in a subdivision but it's in an area where there are large tracts and wooded areas. Ours is one of the last to be relatively "unimproved", but it was always my dad's position that you cannot improve on nature. I'm looking forward to feeling connection to the land and the place without him and my mother.

Ooooh, this looks like fun. I have two places, where I live now and where I grew up. My neighborhood now still has a relationship to the land itself there is a park with a spring fed pond and there is a creek close-by and a large cemetery and some really interesting houses. I think I can work with this. It will also have the benefit of pushing me to be out to walk around and get some exercise.

I did an annual subscription as a gift - will they receive the Journey in Place book?

Wonderful. Worked on Berry Lands for 7 years from 2007-2014. Got to know all the land managers from Forestry to cattle to horses. I imagine Dr. Cipollini is still heading the longleaf project?

I think a retirement is in the offing. That's what I heard.

Well, he has been at that one project for a good long while too. Makes for a good data set and many lessons learned!

Having moved to suberbs from a more rural setting I am actually really excited about learning more about my place.... just the thought if this has me noticing.... when does the train go by, when do people walk their dogs... leave for work.... what birds do i see on my morning walks.... the smells in the neighborhood... is that fabric softener or a bush.... Noticing is wonderful.... to me noticing is key to developing sense of place... I am so looking forward to working through these sessions.... I’m not much of a writer... but i am going to give myself grace and write without regard for audience

Wonderful. All the writing is optional AND there will be plenty of outside activities. I'm so glad we get to journey together.

So damn excited about this, and so grateful to you for offering it, Janisse. I consider you a genius at connecting to place, so there's no one I'd rather study this concept with. Can't wait for January!

Well, there's no one I'd rather study with either, than you. xo
