Remember, I’ll be at Sandy Creek Nature Center tomorrow to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of a wild place that has been pivotal in so many lives. The land was slated for development & a small group of people decided that Athens needed a nature center. Hallelujah.
They rushed toward a BETTER WORLD. We all can. That’s what I’ll be talking about.
The event is 2-4 tomorrow, Saturday, May 20, 2023 and is absolutely free. The talk will be short, so we’ll have plenty of time for connecting, visiting, and enjoying the outdoors. I’ll be signing books—feel free to bring yours from home or purchase on site. And I love hugs.
If you have a quick story about something fun or amazing or memorable that happened to you at Sandy Creek, would you post it here? I need your stories!
Thank you! Hope to see you soon.
Sandy Creek is located at 205 Old Commerce Road, Athens, GA 30607.
I don't really have a story, although my daughters spent their youths hiking the trails and catching salamanders after the first autumnal rains here, as well as catching their first glimpse of a male prothonotary warbler sitting on a branch and singing for a mate, at SCNC. Someone I will praise for his tireless work in keeping nature intact in Clarke County is Prof. Walter Cook who was instrumental in establishing the center. Walt taught recreation and related subjects for many years in what now is the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and had a big role in establishing "natural resources" as part of the School name. Although that change was made after his retirement, if my memory serves me correctly, his spirit was guiding us all in supporting the change from Forest Resources to Forestry and Natural Resources.
